Class Description: Intaglio is a printmaking technique in which lines are etched or engraved into a metal plate. The prints produced from this process usually contain fine line work and high detail. During the printing process, the etched or engraved lines hold the ink, and the paper is embossed into the plate to pick up the ink. This is the opposite of relief printmaking, where the ink rests on top of a carved surface, and the paper is pressed onto that surface.
Students will learn how to create line etchings through utilizing hardground, etching drawing tools, and ferric chloride. This class will teach the basics of copper etching, safe usage of acids for copper etching, drawing on a hardground surface, and printing an edition of etched plates. No previous experience required! The Print Studio will be open to students for open studio hours from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM on Saturdays.
